    Introduction

Seden House is home to 40 young people living side-by-side in individual apartments, supported by teaching and administrative staff. Tata Steel worked closely with the architect and client to realise the vision for an inspiring and colourful building that would enhance the well-being of residents.

    The challenge

The project team required a building system that not only delivered aesthetic appeal for the scheme, but also minimised maintenance costs in the future.

    The solution

Tata Steel’s Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® was specified in four colours to achieve the vision for the building, both in terms of colour and gloss retention, and delivering the desired curvature of the structure.

    Challenge

    Thinking beyond the building

Creating a building that goes beyond being a functional space and has a positive impact on its occupants requires careful planning and design. For the Seden House project in Odense, Denmark, brightening the lives of 40 young residents was the goal.

    Delivering a challenging design

Designing a deliberate and considered colour scheme as part of a complex curved building structure presented a challenge to Tata Steel. The concept for the building was to enhance the well-being of occupants, with common facilities located in the heart of the two-storey building and accommodation wings stretching out to both sides.

Architects for the project, A/S Hune & Ekjaer, designed Seden House in close cooperation with the developer, Odense Municipality Older Handicap Division. Alongside the main contractor, Dansk Boligbyg A/S and project engineer, Moe & Brødsgaard, Tata Steel were asked to supply the pre-finished steel building system to meet the complex needs of the project.

    Uplifting colour

    Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel offers exceptional performance and corrosion resistance for building envelope applications. To achieve the design vision for the Seden House project, the sinusoidal profiled wall cladding, also manufactured by Tata Steel, was specified in four colours;

    • Aztec Yellow (RAL 085 80 85)
    • Chili (RAL 3000)
    • Poppy Red (RAL 3020)
    • Bamboo (RAL 075 60 40).

It was this distinctive use of colour that saw the Seden House project gain the ‘Color Award 2010 for residential services’ from the Danish Painting and Freddy Johansen Foundation. This prize is awarded to projects where the colour scheme forms an important and prominent part of the building, promotes a certain behavior amongst occupants and challenges their senses.

“Seden House is characterised by a well thought out use of colour. The orange, red, yellow and light brown hues in the exterior profiles around the oval hall visually link the interior to provide reassurance and experiences for residents.”
Ole Draborg, director and committee member of Danish Painting

The Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® colour range used in the building helps to scale the architectural design and provide perspective within some of the open spaces, particularly the long corridors. Transferring the colour scheme from the building envelope to these inner spaces continues the architectural theme and enhances aesthetic appeal throughout the building.

“It is important to create a physical environment that supports our residents’ well-being. At Seden House there is an impressive visual look with bright colours, which put you in a good mood. In every way it is a thoughtful construction.”
    Karin Justesen, Secretary, Seden House

“The flexibility of the pre-finished steel allowed the wall cladding to be mounted to the desired curvature of the building, without any damage to the pre-finished steel.”
Niels Christian Nielsen, Hune & Elkjaer Architects
