Over 3600 children take part in 2009 Corus Kids of Steel triathlons

02 Oct 2009

The third annual Corus Kids of Steel series took place this September, introducing school children around the country to the sport of triathlon.

Over 3600 children in Corby, Scunthorpe, Teesside and Newham in London ran, cycled and swam around junior triathlon courses, many gaining their first-ever experience of the event.

The Corus Kids of Steel series was organised by Corus and the British Triathlon Federation. Bikes, helmets and t-shirts were provided, so the children only needed trainers and swimming costumes to take part.

Teesside Asset Management Director Dave Nicol said: "This is an excellent event because we always see large numbers of children taking part in the sporting activities and, most importantly, having fun."

Head of PE at Huntcliff School in Redcar, John Yuille, said: “It’s an absolutely brilliant opportunity because it’s a ‘come and try’ type of event.”

British Triathlon Federation CEO Zara Hyde Peters said: “We are delighted to provide children with an early experience of triathlon. In conjunction with our corporate partners Corus, we take great pride in providing a fun, active and enjoyable day that creates opportunities for children to achieve their personal triathlon challenges, while keeping big smiles on their faces.”

Construction Solutions Director Murray Bean, who represented Corus at the event in Newham – host borough for the 2012 London Olympics – added: “Grassroots triathlon is a major part of our support for British Triathlon and it’s tremendous that so many children took part in the Corus Kids of Steel events. These are a great way to involve youngsters in a new and exciting sport, and as the day is all about having a go, we hope that the children will go away with a positive experience and, whether they choose to take up triathlon or not, that they continue to lead active and healthy lifestyles.”
