Steel for a sustainable future
Steel is an essential material, intrinsic to our way of life and to the products society will demand in a sustainable future. Steel is a uniquely sustainable material because once made, it can be used, as steel, for ever.
Steel is at the heart of modern society and so just by making steel, we play an essential role in society. Steel helps to transform communities by enabling infrastructure, such as bridges, buildings, railways and energy generation. Moreover steel touches our everyday lives around the world, through a myriad of consumer goods. It is true to say that if it is not made from steel, it is made using steel.
Apart from being an essential material, steel can claim to be a sustainable material because of the unique ability to be truly recycled. While all products and materials claim to be recyclable, only steel is truly recycled through an efficient closed-loop system. Steel made today will be used, as steel, for generations to come. Making steel today is an investment which will be paid off many times over and will avoid the need for future generations to use up precious resources.
Steel is a unique material because it is truly recyclable – when steel is recycled it becomes new steel and not an inferior product. Since steel does not downgrade when recycled, it can be re-used over and over again and moreover, steel is the most recycled material in the world. The impact of making steel can be viewed as an investment in a material which will be used again and again, rather than a one-off, making steel a highly sustainable material.
The products we make can have a far greater impact than the combined impacts of the processes we use to make them. This is not only for new, advanced products. In many cases, standard steel products are still, and will always be, the best material choice for sustainable applications.
