    The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is renowned as one of the most important chess events in the world. The tournament brings together the world’s leading chess players and the most passionate amateurs with its grandmaster groups and amateur events.

    78th Edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament: January 15-31, 2016

    World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen won the tournament for the fifth time this year. 

    The main rounds of the tournament once again took place in the traditional location of Wijk aan Zee, with two Chess On Tour events in Amsterdam and Utrecht. 

    The next Tata Steel Chess Tournament will take place from January 13-29, 2017. 

    Two player groups

    The world famous tournament has two main player groups, each with 14 players. They are known as the Tata Steel Masters and the Tata Steel Challengers. Both groups attract world class players and online spectators from across the globe. 

    Tata Steel is proud of the global standing this tournament has acquired during its long history, and the positive impact it continues to have both inside and outside the world of chess.
