Placements/internships are a hugely valuable experience for undergraduates, a chance to put theory into practice. This practical experience will make a considerable difference to your CV when it comes to applying for permanent opportunities further down the line, whether that’s with Tata Steel or another employer. 


We offer 3 to 12 month placements to undergraduates across a number of our business areas and sites. To view our site locations Click here

We have a number of opportunities that require specific degrees such as Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. We also have a number of positions that do not require a specific degree but are looking for a passion in the discipline such as Finance and Manufacturing.

What you will need to apply for our annual placement programme:

  • On track to graduate with a specified grade (please see individual adverts for more detail on the grade requirements)
  • Passion for the field you are applying for
  • Eligibility to work and live in the UK
  • A full driving licence and independent access to a vehicle - if required (role dependant)

Electrical Engineers

You will specify, design, build, install, commission and maintain a huge range of machines, ensuring that high performance is maintained and that the highest safety standards are met. It calls for the dedication and analytical mindset needed to investigate failures to root cause and explore every opportunity to drive continuous improvement. Mechanical Engineers

The role of a Mechanical Engineer can vary hugely depending on the environment and location of your department. So, transferable skills and flexibility are key to a successful career. We want people who can apply engineering theory in practical situations, using their planning, time management and engineering expertise to deliver the right solution. It’s very much a collaborative process.

In a Works Engineering department, you will join a mixed team that includes engineers, supervisors and technicians and crafts people. In your role, you’ll have every opportunity to impact the full project lifecycle, ensuring our exacting standards of quality, safety, cost and efficiency are achieved, as well as meeting our commitment to being environmentally responsible. You’ll provide root cause analysis, work with emerging technologies and constantly learn from the exceptional people around you.
 

Civil and Structural Engineers

Our Civil and Structural Engineers play a crucial role in the life cycle management of our company’s civil and structural assets. You will specify, design, build, install, commission and maintain a varying range of civil and structural assets, ensuring that high performance is maintained and that the highest safety standards are met.

Our Civil Or Structural engineers occupy a unique position within the company. Multi-skilled, inventive, constantly learning, they manage the assets of our organization throughout its lifecycle. From large scale procurement and customer focused projects to hands on maintenance, the variety of experiences here is unlike any other company.

Manufacturing Engineers

Our Manufacturing function plays a vital role in keeping our sites running smoothly. Working closely with colleagues in and beyond Manufacturing, to ensure that plant performance is optimised and that production targets are achieved. This involves operating at pace, with precision and to accurate technical guidelines. The roles are varied - you will be involved with all elements associated with Manufacturing, including health & safety, quality, customer focus and production efficiency. Your motivation will always be the same - to ensure our customers’ requirements are achieved on time, every time.

To be eligible for a placement you should be on track to achieve a 2:1 degree in Engineering, Science, Manufacturing or Operations-based Management.
 

Chemical Engineers

Technical and Manufacturing

Our Technical and Manufacturing career opportunities offer the chance to work at the cutting edge of steelmaking. Tata Steel’s heritage and expertise in the industry are second to none and these roles are dedicated to building on this legacy and continuing to set standards and break new ground in the industry.

 

Technical

Our Technical function ensures that our products meet and exceed our customers’ exacting needs, both now and in the future. The roles are varied but the challenge is always the same: to develop and improve every grade of steel, so that it’s ready to meet the challenges of every possible application, from electrical use to aerospace and beyond. Technical excellence is at the heart of everything we do, underpinning areas including quality assurance, laboratory management, non-destructive testing, metallurgical investigations and supply chain. Whilst there’s plenty of scope for independent working, you could just as easily find yourself in a customer-facing role, working alongside Commercial and Supply chain colleagues, liaising with Research & Development, or collaborating with our Operational teams. Whichever remit you favour, you will need highly developed analytical skills, an aptitude for problem-solving, the ability to influence those around you, and first-rate project management and organisational skills. These skills will be supported by an interest in science, a desire to learn and innovate, and the drive to achieve results in often challenging situations.

Manufacturing 

The Manufacturing function plays a vital role in keeping our sites running smoothly. You will work closely with colleagues in and beyond Manufacturing, ensuring that plant performance is optimised and that production targets are achieved. It involves operating at pace, with precision and to accurate technical guidelines. Skill, expertise and dedication are critical.

Your motivation will always be to ensure our customers’ requirements are achieved on time, every time. You will be involved with all elements associated with Manufacturing, including health & safety, quality, customer focus and production efficiency. This could be on any one of a multitude of key stakeholder sites, businesses or projects, such as in a manufacturing unit, Technical department, or Business Improvement team. Human Resources (HR)

In order to succeed in a demanding market place we need to make sure we have the right people with the relevant skills in the right positions.
The Human Resources team makes this happen, ensuring that the business attracts, supports, develops and retains the best people. Within this team, you will support the delivery of HR services across a range of activities.

We’re looking for placements who can develop contribute to the implementation of a wide range of projects that impact on employee communication, stakeholder engagement and organisational development.

Information & Communication Technology (ICT)

Tata Steel is one of the world’s most geographically diversified steel producers, with operations in 26 countries and commercial offices in over 35 countries. The manufacture of world-leading steel products is underpinned by cutting-edge technology. Information & Communication Technology is responsible for the Information Technology (IT) our employees use to do their jobs, from the business systems that power the back office to the front line support and operation systems. ICT manage information use throughout the business, ensuring the safety, availability and integrity of all forms of data and structures that support it.

As a member of the ICT team, you could be working on Information Management, Information Systems Coordination, Information Analysis, or even Information Security. The possibilities are as broad and far-ranging as our business; what remains constant is the career-making, in-depth experience you’ll gain of our business-critical functions.

 

Finance

In a complex, multi-national business like Tata Steel, a world-class Finance function is vital. Our Finance Business Partners are spread throughout the group and their expert advice guides and informs strategic and operational decision-making across all of our functions.

We have in-house specialists operating across every financial discipline, including Business Reporting & Planning, Reporting & Group Control, Taxation, Internal Audit, Treasury and Mergers & Acquisitions. As a member of our Graduate Programme you’ll have the opportunity to gain experience in at least one of these specialist areas, as well as building up in-depth experience of the broader Finance function. You’ll lay the foundations for your career with placements in the core areas of Transactional Processes, General Ledger Accounting, Manufacturing Accounting & Reporting, Sales & Marketing Accounting and Reporting, and Business Partnering.


Procurement

Broadly speaking, our Procurement team manages our external spend with a wide range of partners and suppliers. We work with a network of over 5,000 suppliers globally, covering an extensive range of goods and services such as raw materials, energy, fleet and logistics services, IT services, and professional services.

At Tata Steel, we leverage innovative technologies, creative thinking and breakthrough ideas to stay future-ready. Our aim is always to inspire and drive sustainable relationships with our partners, as well as through our own organisation – so our Procurement professionals need strong communication, relationship/project management and negotiation skills. You’ll work closely with suppliers, exploring every opportunity to increase cost effectiveness, increase efficiencies and ensure that our organisation is benefitting from continuous improvement and focused on longer term goals.

Application Process

We operate a four stage recruitment process, which consists of:

Stage 1 - Application Form

You must apply online for all vacancies.

You can complete your application during one session, or you can log in and out of your account at your convenience and complete the forms in stages if you wish. Please ensure that you apply before the closing date.

Important Hints and Tips
Please complete all parts of the application form. 
Don’t forget the quality of your application is the first impression the company will have of you, therefore, before you submit your application please ensure the following:

•All sections are completed thoroughly and accurately.
• Spelling and grammar is correct.
• All personal details such as email, mobile telephone numbers, landlines and addresses are completed thoroughly and accurately.

Throughout the selection process we will contact you via the email address and contact number that you register with. Please ensure that these details are accurate.

Short-listing Criteria
Short-listing will be conducted via the following criteria:
• The strength and quality of your CV.
• You have obtained or are expected to obtain the minimum entry qualification requirements.

Following the application deadline, candidates should be informed of the outcome of their application within 2 weeks.


Stage 2 – Assessments

Should you be successful following the short-listing of the application forms, you may be invited via email to complete a series of assessments, this may be in-person at our sites or on-line. Not all placement vacancies will be required to take assessments.

You will only be able to complete the assessments once. If you are invited to take on-line assessments, please make sure you have done the practice assessments before completing the real thing. Please ensure you are in a quiet room with no distractions.

Should you be successful and invited to undertake the assessments, it is essential that you complete these assessments within the given timescale. Following completion of online or in-person assessments, candidates should be informed of the outcome within two weeks via email. 

 

Stage 3 – Interview/Presentation

Should you be successful at the assessments stage, you will be invited to attend an interview.

This interview will be competency based, strength based and function specific. You will receive an email with the time and date of your interview. Alternative arrangements will only be made in extenuating circumstances.

You may also be requested to prepare and present a short presentation at interview stage.

We aim to provide feedback within 7 working days following your interview. If you have not heard back after that, please feel free to contact the talent acquisition team for an update.

Remember, an interview isn’t just a conversation. It’s an opportunity for you to find out more about the position and for us to find out more about you

 

Stage 4 - Offer

If you are successful, we will call you to make a verbal job offer, this will be made to you within 1-2 weeks of your interview.

Offer paperwork will then follow up to 4 weeks after, via email.
