    1. What is the innovative concept?

A new high-tech robotic welding line that is installed at our Automotive Service Centre in Wednesfield, West Midlands – the largest in the UK. One of only a few in the world, the new production line produces Tailor Welded Blanks (TWB) – special sheets of steel made from different thicknesses and grades. In the UK, the Tailor Welded Blanking Line is often the last destination for our steel which is made in Port Talbot and galvanized in our Llanwern Zodiac plant before being sent to vehicle manufacturers. These steel parts – often used for car door panels – enable manufacturers to make lighter vehicles with lower emissions, while boosting miles per gallon.

    2. What is different about this innovative concept?

We have been producing Tailor Welded Blanks at our Wednesfield site since their initial development in the 1990s with a further investment in 2014 increasing our capacity for 2-dimensional welded blanks. Following a £4 million investment, the new production line is the fastest, biggest and most efficient in the UK. It can weld more than a thousand car parts every hour with the steel being shipped to car makers across the UK, and new orders now are being won in Germany, France and the Netherlands. The latest investment in the Automotive Service Centre greatly increases our capabilities and means we can offer our automotive customers a complete, highly-specialised service.

    3. How will this innovative concept make a difference to an end user / customers?

The cutting edge technology will treble the amount of automotive parts we can produce for customers across the UK and Europe. The line allows the use of the most appropriate steel grade and thickness in the exactly the right place on the component optimising material use and minimising post-joining operations for our customers. The benefit for our customers is evident; it offers the opportunity to join up to five individual shaped blanks of differing material grades and thickness, allowing panels to be optimised for weight and cost without compromise to safety performance, with our customers receiving weight-saving opportunities and cost-reduction possibilities, including decreasing overall tooling costs.
