  • Enhanced occupant safety performance

    The seating and interior system must resist a wide range of impact loads – at front, side and rear - to provide the required occupant safety performance.

    These high levels of performance are to ensure that:

    • airbags deploy from their mountings on the instrument panel beam
    • safety belts ‘pre-tension’ around the occupant
    • occupant response is controlled by the seat structure to minimise injury during impact

    Safety from strength

    To meet safety performance requirements, we have developed a range of steels that offer high strength combined with good formability. These steels enable manufacture of safety-critical seating components such as side members and seat tracks.

    Products for enhanced safety 

    Our cold rolled advanced high strength steel (AHSS) and ultra high strength steel (UHSS) grades enhance safety performance by:

    • providing the required strength to resist impact loads
    • absorbing the energy of the impact
    • ensuring controlled deformation to avoid buckling of the structure

    In order to ensure occupant safety requirements are met, seating designs are modelled with computer simulations. It is crucial that the right material models are used within the simulation.
