  • Steel recycling

Steel is the most recycled packaging material in Europe and across the world. It is a permanent material that can be recycled over and over again with no loss of quality.

According to APEAL, well-established and efficient recycling infrastructures have helped to ensure that 79.5% of steel packaging is recycled in Europe. Together with European steel industry colleagues, we aim to increase that rate to 80% by 2020.

    Benefits of steel recycling

Steel recycling saves resources and reduces CO2 emissions, energy consumption and water usage. It also reduces the amount of waste going to landfill. According to worldsteel, more than 22 billion tonnes of steel have been recycled worldwide since 1900 – resulting in significant energy and raw material savings. worldsteel states that, for every tonne of scrap made into new steel, there are savings of:

    • more than 1,400kg of iron ore
    • 740kg of coal
    • 120kg of limestone

Our leading role in steel recycling

Tata Steel is the largest steel reprocessor in the UK. In South Wales we have a department entirely dedicated to the recycling of packaging steel. It offers an end market for used packaging steel – ensuring that we play a full part in closing the steel recycling loop.

Our Packaging Recycling team, along with Tata Steel colleagues in the Netherlands, works in partnership with several organisations to promote recycling and reduce the amount of steel packaging going to landfill.

    We are:

    • founding members of the UK MetalMatters campaign – set up to help local authorities promote kerbside metal recycling and increase household participation in metal packaging recycling schemes.
    • reprocessors of used steel packaging collected by UK local authorities and waste management companies
    • the biggest recycler of steel packaging extracted from waste collection in the Netherlands
    • active members of the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA) in the UK – sharing this organisation’s vision that ‘no metal packaging should go to landfill’
    • active members of the Dutch metal packaging manufacturers association, Stichting Kringloop Blik (SKB), which champions metal packaging recycling
    • working with a network of associations in the Netherlands on sustainability-related issues including steel recycling
    • steering group members at WRAP England and WRAP Wales. WRAP’s vision is a world in which resources are used sustainably
    • represented on the Advisory Committee on Packaging  – a body of industry experts providing advice and recommendations to the UK government on packaging re-use, recovery and recycling
