  • Scunthorpe delivers its millionth tonne of rail

    21 Jun 2013 | Trade News

More than 100 rail customers, senior managers and staff from Tata Steel gathered at the company’s Scunthorpe site today to witness the despatch of the millionth tonne of rail from the plant.

It has taken just seven years for Scunthorpe to reach this important milestone since converting its medium sections rolling mill at Scunthorpe to enable it to also produce rail.

Henrik Adam, Chief Commercial Officer for Tata Steel in Europe, said: “It is a great pleasure today to be celebrating with our key customers the delivery of the first million tonnes of rail from Scunthorpe. We are committed to working with our customers in order to make the difference that enables them to succeed in their own markets. We create and deliver high-quality rail products, but in the service we provide we offer much more than just rail.”

Guests at the event were given a tour of the Tata Steel site on board a steam train, as well as having the chance to tour the mills where steel billets are rolled into rail before being finished, welded and loaded onto special trains for dispatch.

Jon Bolton, Director Long Products Hub, said: “In 2006 we invested £130 million at Scunthorpe to enable us to produce the 216-metre long rail customers wanted.

“We are always looking to develop new and better rail products and the range of customers who now use our rail in everything from passenger and freight lines to inner-city tram lines proves we need to continue to innovate to serve our customers’ needs.”

Since 2000 more than £160 million has been invested in Tata Steel’s advanced rail manufacturing facilities. There has been an increase in the quality of the steel bloom going to the rail rolling mills and a transformation in the manufacturing logistics to handle the new long rail products.
