What’s at the top of the wish list for aerosol canmakers? A competitive edge - whether it’s a more economical production line or greater creative scope with metal packaging. Protact®, Tata Steel’s laminated steel, has a proven track record in delivering both these qualities for aerosol canmakers.

    Polymer coating system

Protact features a steel substrate with a polymer coating system on each side which has been optimised for aerosol as well as food, beverage, beer and general line applications. Its polymer coating is made up of three separate layers including an adhesion layer, a main layer and a surface layer.

For aerosol can manufacturers, Protact’s polymer coating is not susceptible to corrosion from liquids, like shaving foam or hair mousse.  And its flexible coating system prevents can end deterioration making it a good choice for steamy, humid environments which you’re likely to find in a typical bathroom.

    A proven track record

For two-piece aerosol container manufacturers, Protact offers opportunities to increase production and improve product performance, in the same way that it has benefited two-piece, drawn and wall ironed (DWI) canmakers.  For example, due to the state-of-the-art coating system, canmakers can reduce the need to maintain expensive lacquering operations at their own facilities and we’ve seen some manufacturers eliminate up to five processes from their lines.  Protact is also under development at full DWI width – 1220mm – for increased can line output.

Due to improved production line efficiency, can manufacturers will benefit from a more environmentally-friendly footprint. Use of Protact significantly reduces volatile organic compound emissions and energy and water consumption levels are lowered throughout the can-making process.  And, of course, made with steel, Protact can be recycled indefinitely, with no loss of quality or complicated separation techniques needed before entering the reuse cycle.

    Stand out shelf appeal

A leaner production line is essential for enhancing a product’s competitive edge, but the market place is crowded with different aerosol products. Offering customers the ability to stand out from the rest is a key factor for aerosol canmakers.

Protact has been developed to support high quality printing and is designed to work with the latest direct-to-cylinder printing technology – helping producers stay ahead in reliability and image quality.  Protact is available in gold, clear, ultra white and black. Excitingly, blue Protact is also going through the product trial stages.

Printing on ultra white Protact offers aerosol canmakers a true, vibrant colour, unleashing a whole new creative level for packaging designers and helping aerosol cans leap straight from the supermarket shelf into consumers’ shopping baskets.
