  • Tata Steel demonstrates how customers benefit from strip focus

    22 Sep 2016 | Trade News

Tata Steel will use this year’s EuroBLECH exhibition, which takes place next month in Hanover, Germany, to demonstrate how customers operating in the automotive, yellow goods and consumer goods industries benefit from the steel producer’s increased focus on strip, following the sale of its Long Products Europe business earlier this year. The steel maker will showcase optimised strip steels with higher formability and strength along with value-adding technical services that can improve manufacturing rates and end-product performance.

One of the key developments Tata Steel will highlight at EuroBLECH is a new 25mm thick strip steel, which is currently in the trial phase. Following successful testing, the steel producer will offer the product in widths of up to 2 metres, as well as in different thicknesses. The resulting product will give customers a tough and strong alternative to discrete steel plate for applications such as yellow goods machinery, where thickness, toughness and strength is required.

Customers in the yellow goods industry will also be offered insights into Tata Steel’s more established grades, including its HR HSLA Ympress® range. These products comprise tough and strong steel grades developed to operate in the harshest of environments, yet still offer customers further weight-saving potential.

Consumer goods industry customers will get an overview of the steel producer’s series of pre-finished steels like Ymvit®, its enamelling steel, with coatings tailored to meet exacting functional and aesthetic performance for Large Domestic Appliances.

Reroller customers can look forward to information about Tata Steel’s high-carbon grades as well as the steel producer’s work in mid-carbon products, aimed at the tube market for end use in the automotive sector.

For the automotive industry, Tata Steel has just launched XPF800, a new premium steel for highly demanding chassis applications, such as lower control arms, at an 800 MPa strength level. Its improved combination of stretch flangeability and elongation creates a unique advantage on conventional chassis steels, enabling more design freedom for attractive light weighting, without compromising manufacturing robustness and performance.

Tailored technical services and distribution network

To enable its customers to fully exploit the potential of these strip grades, Tata Steel will also present its Customer Technical Services, showcasing how the steel producer helps customers tap into its full range of products and its range of technical support services throughout the entire supply chain, from partnering with Tata Steel on new product developments that will take the customer to the next level, to enhancing the performance of existing end products.

With access to a wide range of testing facilities, the large team of Customer Technical Service engineers are geographically located to ensure quick access to customers in key European regions. This enables them to assist customers quickly and efficiently. In combination with the major distribution sites at Gelsenkirchen and Neuss in Germany and Maastricht in the Netherlands as well as service centres in France and Spain, customers can get the exact material when they need it, supported by dedicated technical services.

“Our focus on strip products is backed up by our flexible manufacturing and processing operations producing even better, tailored grades and supported by our outstanding customer technical service offering,” said Henrik Adam, Chief Commercial Officer at Tata Steel in Europe. “We have a whole team of experts able to step into a customer’s production line and improve their manufacturing performance and yield by specifying the best type of steel to match processing capability and market ambitions.”
