Tata Steel launches high-quality Environmental Product Declaration scheme for steel building products

Tata Steel has launched product-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) covering its entire range of structural hollow sections.

Tata Steel has launched product-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) covering its entire range of structural hollow section (SHS). The EPDs are third party verified and rank highly in sustainability certification schemes. They enable customers in the construction industry to improve their position under building certification schemes such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). In addition, EPDs are increasingly required in construction project pre-qualification documentation.

Tata Steel is the first steel manufacturer to become an approved EPD programme operator. This has enabled it to create product-specific EPDs that comply with international standards EN 15804 and ISO 14025.

Barry Rust, Energy and Sustainability Manager at Tata Steel said: “As part of our strong sustainability ethos, we aim to become the benchmark in sustainable steel-enabled construction. We already have BES 6001 responsible sourcing certification across almost all of our construction products. The provision of product-specific environmental impact data through our EPD scheme demonstrates our ongoing commitment to sustainable steel building products.

“Because our EPDs are product-specific and externally verified, they are ranked higher in sustainability certification schemes when compared with EPDs based on average industry data.”

The EPDs cover all Tata Steel SHS products including our leading Celsius® hot-finished tube. Product life cycle data ranges from raw material extraction, manufacture and fabrication, through to use and end-of-life.
Steve Whitfield, Technical Sales Manager said: “Our EPDs cover life cycle data specific to SHS products and processes at all of our tube production facilities. This allows customers to be confident that all of our hollow section products are covered, irrespective of where they are made. The EPDs are easy to access and download from our website.

“Tata Steel is the only steel supplier offering both product-specific EPDs and BES 6001 responsible sourcing certification. This enables informed product choice and means customers can rest safe in the knowledge that we are a sustainable supplier.”

Tata Steel’s EN 15804:2012 verified EPD programme covers the development of Type III environmental declarations in accordance with the requirements of EN 15804 (Sustainability of construction works – Environmental Product Declarations – Core rules for the product category of construction products) and ISO 14025:2010 (Environmental labels and declaration – Type III environmental declarations – Principles and procedures).
