Photo 1 - Phil Lloyd, Colors No 2 CoCo, Wildflowers – ‘This is perfectly composed. It fits the theme really well. A wonderful foreground. Classic Shotton! The main wildflower in the shot is Viper’s Bugloss, which normally only grows in limestone areas. Unless I’m mistaken, I suspect that this plant only exists at Shotton because of the steel slag under the ground. So it’s a perfect example of biodiversity created by our activities.’

Photo 2 - Dave Compton, Colors Transport, Industry & Nature – ‘The reflections are perfect, and I like the vegetation in the foreground. Wonderful light and it shows off so much of why Shotton is such a wonderful plant, with nature surrounding the buildings.’

Photo 3 - Paul Stringer, Building Systems Technical Services, Tata Steel Jetty – ‘I think the composition is excellent. There are different sets of lines heading for different vanishing points. The clouds are awesome and the vegetation emerging from the wooden planks shows that nature will always find a way to co-exist with us!’

Photo 4 - Alan Rainsforth (via Steel News in the archives), Colors Engineering, - ‘Obviously one from the archives but I love this image. The expressions on the three guys and the happiness on their faces as they interact with nature are wonderful. It’s also a very sharp image. The blast furnace in the background is the icing on the cake.’
