The challenge

Sainsbury’s is a high-profile supermarket brand with 1,000 Sainsbury’s stores located across the UK. A typical Sainsbury’s supermarket contains more than 250 metres of gas pipework. Legislative and regulatory compliance are primary concerns in the safe and efficient installation of these pipework systems. To ensure success, Sainsbury’s sought technical support from Tata Steel for recent gas pipework projects where INSTALL+TM tube was utilised.

Sainsbury’s Engineering and its facilities management company, Arcus FM, required clarification on suitable steel tube and jointing systems to meet the demanding legislative and regulatory requirements of the gas industry. It was essential that the pipework for the Sainsbury’s supermarkets was installed and certified fully in accordance with the UK Pressure Systems Safety Regulations, 2000.

The solution

Tata Steel’s technical experts have a full understanding of the legislative and regulatory requirements for gas pipework.  In their support work for Sainsbury’s, the Tata Steel team also utilised in-depth knowledge of the design and application of screwed and socketed joints.

Tata Steel’s INSTALL+TM tube, manufactured in the UK, was supplied in sizes ¾ inch to 4 inch nominal bore (medium weight), in a red primer paint finish. INSTALL+TM tube is intended for building and engineering services applications where the tube grade used should be a harmonised standard in accordance with the European Construction Products Directive (CPD – 89/106/EEC).

INSTALL+™ tube has a wide variety of uses in building and engineering services.  These include heating and ventilation, air conditioning, compressed air and other pressure systems, as well as industrial conveyance of liquids and gases.
