Zeremis - Tata Steel's journey towards carbon neutral steel production
Today's companies are constantly seeking and adopting new ways to make the manufacture, distribution and use of products more environmentally friendly. We are all familiar with life cycle thinking. In fact, steel is one of the best materials in terms of life cycle because it can be recycled almost indefinitely. However, the steel industry still has a long way to go to reduce its CO2 emissions. Tata Steel Netherlands has published its own plan to make production fully carbon neutral by 2045.
Tata Steel has long been committed to producing cleaner and lower-emission steel. According to a 2020 World Steel Association study, the IJmuiden steel mill is already the second lowest in the world in terms of CO2 emissions. The IJmuiden steel mill's CO2 emissions are as much as 7% below the European average.
For decades Tata Steel has been researching and developing ways to lower emission when producing steel. The Hlsarna pilot plant, opened in 2011, was the first big step, and the fruits will continue to be harvested in the coming years. However, Tata Steel Netherlands has taken the bold decision to make its entire operation fully carbon neutral, from steel production to delivery to the customer. The change will take time and the journey will be long. However, the roadmap is in place and the ambitious goal is to be a carbon neutral steel producer by 2045.
In July 2022, Tata Steel Netherlands launched Zeremis. Tata Steel's umbrella brand, under which Tata Steel is progressively making its entire production chain carbon neutral. It is not a single product, but a journey towards cleaner steel production. That journey includes not only producing CO2-free steel, but also greater use of recycled steel in the production process, a zero-emission logistics chain from the mine to the customer, and many others. It is a very big and demanding change, but gradually we are transforming our operations towards a cleaner and more sustainable world.
