Apprenticeships in South Wales

South Wales is a major operational hub for Tata Steel and we offer apprenticeships in our four sites, which are Port Talbot, Trostre in Llanelli, Catnic in Caerphilly and Llanwern in Newport.

Requirements

Apprentice Programmes - To be eligible for our apprentice programmes you must have achieved, or be expected to achieve, 5 GCSE's at Grade C/4 or above, including Maths, English Language and Science. For our engineering apprenticeships you must also achieve a Grade B/5 in Maths or above.

Higher Apprentice Programmes - To be eligible for our higher apprentice programmes, you must along with the GCSE apprentice requirements, have achieved 2/3 A Levels at Grade C or above, or equivalent qualifications. 

Degree Apprentice Programmes - To be eligible for our degree apprentice programmes, you must along with the GCSE apprentice requirements, have achieved 3 A Levels, 2 at Grade C or above and one at at Grade B or above, or equivalent qualifications.

Apprenticeships in North Wales

Shotton

On our Shotton site we offer two IET/IMechE accredited apprenticeship opportunities within Manufacturing and Manufacturing Engineering. These cover opportunities in the two business units Tata Steel Colors and Tata Steel Buildings Systems. These include opportunities to specialise in mechanical, electrical, process or machinist disciplines. It’s an opportunity to be part of an apprenticeship where you can learn and study towards an NVQ L3 and BTEC L3 qualifications whilst gaining invaluable practical work experience. Following successful completion of your apprenticeship, there are opportunities to further your academic career.

Requirements

To be eligible for our Apprentice Programme you must have achieved, or be expecting to achieve, 5 GCSEs at grade C / 4 or above, including English, Maths and Science.

 

Manufacturing Apprenticeships 

Tata Steel Colors - Manufacturing Apprenticeship is 2.5yrs in duration, you will be employed by Tata Steel Colors and will attend Coleg Cambria part time for two years on a day release basis, completing BTEC L3 in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and NVQ L3 in Performing Industries Operations.

On successful completion of your apprenticeship you will be offered a full time position with Tata Steel Colors based on one of the Manufacturing process lines.


Engineering Apprenticeships

Engineering Apprenticeships - Colors

Engineering Apprenticeship is 3.5yrs in duration, you will be employed by Tata Steel Colors or Tata Steel Building Systems and will attend TTE full time for two years.

From your third year you will be based on site at Shotton whilst continuing your apprenticeship and NVQ L3 in Process Engineering Maintenance. On successful completion of your apprenticeship you will be offered a full time position within Tata Steel on the Shotton site.

You will be based at TTE and will study for the following qualifications:

Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Operations and Maintenance Engineering;
Level 2 Functional skills;
RoSPA H&S Basic Certificate;

TTE

TTE is a leading training provider that offers training on behalf of a range of companies in the metals, chemical, petrochemical, process, power, paper, pharmaceutical, nuclear and oil and gas industries throughout the North West. TTE provide a three and a half year multi skilled apprenticeship which is a work based training programme where you gain both practical experience at the TTE training centre based in Ellesmere Port and on site at Tata Steel in Shotton. During this time you will have the opportunity to study for nationally recognised qualifications.

Engineering Apprenticeships - Building Systems

Engineering Apprenticeship is Maximum of 3 years in duration, you will be employed by Tata Steel Building Systems and will attend Coleg Cambria.

Course duration will depend on previous engineering qualifications, which could reduce time spent in the apprenticeship scheme to 2 years.

During your apprenticeship you will study NVQ L3 in Process Engineering Maintenance. On successful completion of your apprenticeship you will be offered a full time position within Tata Steel Building Systems on the Shotton site.

You will study for the following qualifications:

Level 3 BTEC Certificate in Advance Manufacture Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical Pathway)
Level 2 Functional skills;
RoSPA or a H&S Basic Certificate;

Coleg Cambria is one of the highest performing colleges in Wales, rated Excellent by Estyn. Working in partnership with over 1,000 employers, the college offers vast apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities with strong links to local employment. Coleg Cambria is based in Connah’s Quay in North Wales, only 3 miles from the Shotton site.

Apprenticeships in East Midlands

Corby

Corby Works, located in Northamptonshire in the heart of England, manufactures approximately 250,000 tonnes per year of thin-wall welded tube from steel strip for use in a range of applications, including construction, lifting and excavating, and energy and power market sectors.

Within Corby we recruit apprentices into both Engineering and Manufacturing.

Requirements

To be eligible for our Apprentice Programme you must have achieved, or be expecting to achieve, 5 GCSEs at grade C / 4 or above, including English, Maths and Science.

 

Engineering Apprenticeships  

The Engineering apprenticeship scheme at Corby is an in-depth programme providing you with the skills and expertise required to become an electrical or mechanical engineer. An apprentice in Electrical will study the uses of electricity and equipment for power generation and distribution and the control of machines and communication systems. A Mechanical apprentice will design, build, install and maintain mechanical machinery, components and tools. As a Tata Steel apprentice you will learn how to identify different components, learn how they work and how to maintain them on plant.


Manufacturing Apprenticeships

Our Manufacturing function plays a vital role in our business. Working closely with colleagues in and beyond Manufacturing, to ensure that plant performance is optimised and that production targets are achieved. This involves operating at pace, with precision and to accurate technical guidelines. The roles are varied - you will be involved with all elements associated with Manufacturing, including health & safety, quality, customer focus and production efficiency.

Wednesfield

Our Steelpark site in Wednesfield is home to our large distribution centre. The site is home to an Automotive Service Centre, Slitting Centre, Light Gauge and Profiling Centre and employs around 600 employees. We will soon be looking to recruit Commercial, Supply Chain, Engineering and Manufacturing apprentices to be part of this large-scale logistics hub.

Requirements

To be eligible for our Apprentice Programme you must have achieved, or be expecting to achieve, 5 GCSEs at grade C / 4 or above, including English, Maths and Science.

 

Supply Chain Business Admin Higher Apprenticeship

The apprentice will support all aspects of the Supply Chain function; it's not just about moving things from A to B.

The team is responsible for order & production planning, scheduling, order management, managing external service providers as well as involvement and leadership within cross-functional continuous improvement and business transformation projects. 

Our success hinges on our ability to understand and balance the demands of internal stakeholders and external customers. Supply Chain roles are dependent on high-level, cross-functional communication and liaison that sees our colleagues working with functions including Sales & Marketing, Technical and Operations.


Commercial Apprenticeships

The Commercial Apprentice roles will spend time in the different teams within Distribution based at Steelpark. They will learn about a range of operational areas to gain a full overview of processes within the business. The main part of the apprenticeship will be spent in the Sales and Customer Services teams to help them develop the required knowledge and skills to deal with customer enquiries and support the Sales team.

Hartlepool

Hartlepool 20” Pipe Mill is located in the North East of England, with an annual production capacity to produce 220,000 tonnes of tube products for the construction, engineering and energy and power markets.

At our Hartlepool site we will be recruiting apprentices into our engineering function.

Requirements

To be eligible for our Apprentice Programme you must have achieved, or be expecting to achieve, 6 GCSE's at grade C / 4 or above including:

Two GCSE's must be at Grade B in Mathematics and one STEM Subject

Four GCSE's must be at Grade C and include English Language

 

Mechanical Fitting Apprenticeships

Our Mechanical craft operate on a scale and precision not even imagined by many other sectors. This is an opportunity to play a crucial role in the life cycle management of our unique equipment. You will maintain, install & build a huge range of machines, ensuring that high performance is maintained and that the highest safety standards are met.

 

Electrical Craft Maintenance Apprenticeships

As an electrical craft maintenance engineer you will be responsible for maintaining the safety, reliability, quality & performance of the relevant equipment. This will involve preventative & breakdown maintenance, installation of equipment and continuous improvement techniques in an effort to reduce costs & improve efficiency.

 

 

Sheffield

At our site in Sheffield, we are recruiting higher apprentices for the following areas:

Shapfell, Penrith

Tata Steel's Shapfell site produces approximately one quarter of the UK’s calcined lime products. Primarily critical steelmaking lime is manufactured, as well as fine lime products for ground stabilisation, construction material products and agricultural lime products.

To be eligible for our Apprentice Programme you must have achieved, or be expecting to achieve, 5 GCSE's at grade C / 4 or above including (including Maths, English and Science/STEM subject.)

Types of apprenticeships

At Tata Steel UK, we offer advanced apprenticeships, higher apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships.

Advanced apprenticeships are level 3 apprenticeships, where entry requirements are GCSE's or equivalent level 2 qualifications. 

Higher apprenticeships are level 4 or 5 apprenticeships, where entry requirements are A levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications.

Degree apprenticeships are level 6 apprenticeships, where entry requirements are A levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications.

Application Process

Stage 1 - Application Form

You must apply online for all vacancies.

You can complete your application during one session, or you can log in and out of your account at your convenience and complete the forms in stages if you wish. Please ensure that you apply before the closing date.

Important Hints and Tips
Please complete all parts of the application form. 
Don’t forget the quality of your application is the first impression the company will have of you, therefore, before you submit your application please ensure the following:

• All sections are completed thoroughly and accurately.
• Spelling and grammar is correct.
• All sections of the supporting information section are completed.
• All personal details such as email, mobile telephone numbers, landlines and addresses are completed thoroughly and accurately.

Throughout the selection process we will contact you via the email address and contact number that you register with. Please ensure that this information is accurate.

Short-listing Criteria
Short-listing will be conducted via the following criteria:
• The strength and quality of responses given in the supporting evidence section of the application form.
• The strength and quality of your CV.
• You have obtained or are expected to obtain the minimum entry qualification requirements.

 

Following the application deadline, candidates should be informed of the outcome of their application within 2 weeks.


Stage 2 – Assessments

Should you be successful following the short-listing of the application forms, you may be invited via email to complete a series of assessments, this may be in-person at our sites or on-line.

You will only be able to complete the assessments once. If you are invited to take on-line assessments, please make sure you have done the practice assessments before completing the real thing. Please ensure you are in a quiet room with no distractions.

Should you be successful and invited to undertake the assessments, it is essential that you complete these tests within the given timescale. Following completion of online or in-person assessments, candidates should be informed of the outcome within two weeks via email. 

 

Stage 3 – Interview/Presentation

Should you be successful at the assessment stage, you will be invited to attend an interview.

This interview will be competencybased, strength based and function specific. You will receive an email with the time and date of your interview. Alternative arrangements will only be made in extenuating circumstances.

You may also be requested to prepare and present a short presentation at interview stage.

We aim to provide feedback within 7 working days following your interview. If you have not heard back after that, please feel free to contact the talent acquisition team for an update.

Remember, an interview isn’t just a conversation. It’s an opportunity for you to find out more about the position and for us to find out more about you.

 

Stage 4 - Offer

If you are successful, we will call you to make a verbal job offer, this will be made to you within 1-2 weeks of your interview.

Offer paperwork will then follow up to 4 weeks after, via email.
