Our Technical function ensures that our products meet and exceed our customers’ exacting needs, both now and in the future. The roles are varied but the challenge is always the same: to develop and improve every grade of steel, so that it’s ready to meet the challenges of every possible application, from electrical use to aerospace and beyond. Technical excellence is at the heart of everything we do, underpinning areas including quality assurance, laboratory management, non-destructive testing, metallurgical investigations and supply chain.

1. Most rewarding experiences ? | In my first few months of joining the company I got a very exciting challenge to create a new method of optimising the buffer stocks that we hold for all the SKUs. This was a massive opportunity for me and enabled me to design and build a simulation model to test where stock could be removed from the chain if it wasn't required. This project ended up saving the company millions of pounds and gave me the confidence that I needed to keep progressing in the business. |
---|---|
2. What are you doing now ? | I am currently working within the Order Fulfilment and Inventory Design team. I spent my first placement in this team when I joined the company and after learning the job roles of other teams within the department I knew this was where I wanted to work. After my placement had finished, I was given the opportunity to remain in the team and take on further responsibilities. |
3. What are the benefits to working to working at Tata? | The organisation and the people within it are very supportive and encouraging whenever you have a new concept or an idea of how you would like to contribute. Hard work truly is rewarded at TATA and you will always see the benefits of the work that you are doing. |
4. Why Tata over other graduate schemes ? | When I joined Tata and was immediately involved in some important projects and challenges, I found myself surprised at how much emphasis there was on new starters in such a big company. High level managers always asked every employee for their opinion and ideas at the start of a project and they treat every idea as equal no matter who voiced it. I believe this is the best example of the Tata values and showcases how much graduates are valued within the company. |
5. Are there opportunities to travel? | Not in my current role. |
6. What support in developing your career have you had ? | Within your first few months as a graduate you will get the opportunity to choose a mentor who can help with your career devlopment. They are there to help with anything you are struggling with from understanding how best to present yourself in a situation if you are unsure to advice on what skills you need to develop to ultimately reach your career goals. |
7. What is a typical day in your role? | Every morning starts with a team meeting to review any outstanding and new tasks that have been presented to the team. This is a great opportunity to volunteer for any activities that would interest you and to ask for advice on any you are struggling with. The rest of the day is never the same, you get the opportunity to work on so many different, exciting projects that there are very few tasks that remain the same on a daily basis. |
8. What advise would you give to a new starter ? | Try to meet and have conversations with as many people as possible, whether it be going for a cofee or just having a chat in a corridor. There are so many amazing people within the organisation and the likelihood is that you will work with most of them at some point and having a head start on introductions is never a bad idea. |
9. Are there any opportunities for further education ? | Yes, I am currently in my final year of an MSc Operational Research and Applied Statistics. |
10. Is there a structured graduate program? | Yes, there is a two year structured program that will expose you to different areas within Supply Chain and enable you to work within multiple teams. The program is flexible to how you would like to work, personally I found a team that I enjoyed working in and choose to take a permanent position within that team instead of continueing my rotations. |
Graduate profile - Jordon Hurley
Name | Jordon Hurley |
---|---|
Age | 24 |
University | Swansea University |
Degree | Business Management |
Degree Classification (e.g. 1st; 2.1; 2.2) | 2.1 |
Years of Service at Tata | 3 |
Current Job Title / Department | Production Scheduler |
Click on 'See more' below to read Jordon's Q&A:
1. Most rewarding experiences ? | In my first graduate rotation I was given the responsibility of managing a service enhancement project for one of our european service centres in France. It was the first time I have ever taken a project from start to finish so it was great learning curve on how to manage the project life cycle within a real world enviroment. Throughout the project I interacted with many different colleagues throughout the supply chain function so it was great way to meet new people alongside increasing my overall understanding of the wider organisation. The project itself was of course challenging at times but the sense of achievement was a great feeling at the end. |
---|---|
2. What are you doing now ? | I am currently a Port Talbot scheduler who is responsible for scheduling the following areas; Cold mill, Continous Annealing cycle unit, Packing, Rewind Line and Temper Mill. As it is a 24/7 operational role most shifts are never the same so it is a great place to be especially as a relatively new employee as you are constantly adapting to scenarios and learning more and more about the whole end to end process. |
3. What are the benefits to working to working at Tata? | I believe one of the greatest benefits of working for Tata Steel UK is due to the amazing work culture. Everyone is always willing to offer advice and support to help you become better, there are many people within the organisation who are experts within their fields so it is a great place to learn from them but at the same time be apart of a culture where it is okay to be able to challenge decisions as i think from top down this idea of continuous improvement is really key. |
4. Why Tata over other graduate schemes ? | Personally I joined TATA graudate scheme as I had a great experience here as a placement student for a year whilst doing my academic studies. It quickly became apparent that although it is a substantial organisation with thousands of employees every employees voice is heard and respected. Most of the senior leaders within the organisation either started on the graduate scheme or through the apprentice programme so it goes to show how much faith and investment they are willing to put in to you. |
5. Are there opportunities to travel? | Unfortunately I joined not long before the pandemic so my travelling has of course been limited like the whole of the world. However I know several colleagues who have been to India and others who have travelled to Holland/France and many other european countries. |
6. What support in developing your career have you had ? | Throughout the graduate scheme support is always available to you as TATA steel UK views graduates as the future leaders of the organisation. There are several key courses I have completed thanks to the support from HR and the Learning academy which have really helped me identify the areas in which i need to focus on if i want to continue in the right direction. Other support is also there from my line manager and fellow colleagues within the team, from day 1 i have felt that i can ask any question. |
7. What is a typical day in your role? | "See answer for Q3 very similar" |
8. What advise would you give to a new starter ? | Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as possible. There is no such thing as a daft question. |
9. Are there any opportunities for further education ? | Yes, I know other previous graduates who have gone on to do masters thanks to sponsorship from TATA. It is not something I have considered yet but definitely will review over the coming years. |
10. Is there a structured graduate program? | It is structured but at the same time can be altered to your own individual preference. Feel free to speak and sit with other colleagues/departments which in return will broaden your overall knowledge of the organisation. |
