The coordinated cooperation with Tata Steel has given us very good results. We create value together, while shared information makes us more effective. It is certainly a strategy that we continue to develop as before, because we are convinced that there are many more projects that we will develop successfully.

Officially opened in April 2015, work began on Vigo’s new hospital in 2011 with the external envelope having been completed in September 2014. Designed to serve a population of 600,000 across the city, the hospital has 1,465 beds, 24 operating theatres and covers a total floor area of 280,000 square metres.

The challenge

At the time of construction, it was the largest public works contract in Spain and the construction had to meet certain programme deadlines in order to qualify for central Government funding. Tata Steel was able to deliver in an exceptional four weeks, when the original supplier was unable to meet the required delivery schedule.

In a country hard hit by the Eurozone crisis, controlling costs was considered critical. Therefore Tata Steel’s pre-finished steel products used to manufacture the cladding systems were viewed as matching the original specification requirements.

The solution

Given that the total quantity required exceeded 550 tonnes of Colorcoat® pre-finished steel and with a wide range of colours also being specified to fulfil the architect’s concepts, collaboration across teams was essential. Working efficiently together, Tata Steel’s technical, production and commercial departments, along with customer services, logistics and transport operations cooperated to facilitate the very rapid delivery and support the fast installation of the specified systems.

Over just a two-day period, Tata Steel’s representatives reviewed the project brief and architectural drawings, to provide a detailed production schedule, which was to last a period of four weeks.

Representatives from the technical, commercial and marketing departments, meanwhile liaised with Luis Vidal y Asociados, the architectural consultant, regarding colour options and performance criteria to help agree supply details, and worked closely with Metalpanel who were awarded the contract and production of the initial 380 tonne order of pre-finished steel commenced.

The contract to supply this project has underlined Tata Steel’s capabilities as an international manufacturer of high specification pre-finished steel for roof and wall cladding, offering the highest standards of performance. Both Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® and Colorcoat Prisma® surpass requirements of Ruv4 and RC5 as per EN 10169:2010, therefore proving excellent colour and gloss retention, as well as corrosion resistance.

Despite the challenging timescale and logistical demands, Tata Steel was able to satisfy all of the technical and practical requirements; with all of its departments from design through to transport fulfilling their individual and collective responsibilities.
