The project

The Campos de Sport de El Sardinero (El Sardinero Sports Fields) is a multipurpose
stadium in Santander, Spain and the home of the city’s football club Racing de Santander. Built in 1988, to replace an older and outdated ground dating from 1913, the stadium has a capacity of just over 22,000. The stadium was constructed in a traditional manner for such a facility, with a steel frame incorporating steel raking columns, that in turn support precast concrete planks, to form the four stands.

The challenge

During 2017, a major refurbishment of the stadium. This work included creating new entrances, repairs and the installation of a completely new façade measuring
7,000m2. For the façade, a cladding product was required that could resist the humid and damp coastal environment, as the stadium is only a stone’s throw from the seafront. This coastal location, which adds airborne sea salt to the surrounding environment, made it essential that a durable product was selected. In order to meet these requirements, it was also important that a product was specified that could meet the highest European rating for UV resistance - Ruv4. Consequently, Colorcoat Prisma® was installed, giving the building a new lease of life with a guarantee that satisfied the client’s specification.

The client wanted two essential requirements: a product suitable for the coastal environment and a colour that integrates with the environment in order to offer the best external image of the city.

The solution

One of the essential requirements was the need to aesthetically integrate the new façade into the surrounding environment. The stadium sits within a large park containing the University of Santander, a sports museum and a large modern sports centre, known locally as ‘the Whale’. Colorcoat Prisma® in the special metallic Orion colour was chosen by the city authorities as the best option, for its durability as well as its aesthetic qualities. Being less than 1km from the coast, the project qualified for a 20 year Confidex® Guarantee, satisfying the client’s expectations and providing peace of mind.

“The client chose Colorcoat Prisma® for its guaranteed coastal environment attributes and because the Orion colour matches the important surrounding buildings,” says Juan Claudio Antequera, Tata Steel Regional Account Manager Building Envelope. “We also provided the customer with excellent advice from our technical team, offering solutions to the customer and continual support.”
Summing up the work, Hierros y Transformados Commercial Director Gustavo Garrido says: “The client wanted two essential requirements: a product suitable for the coastal environment and a colour that integrates with the environment in order to offer the best external image of the city.”
