Tata Steel to build new factory to meet increased demand for steel building panels

Tata Steel has today announced it will build a new factory in the Netherlands to enable its subsidiary SAB-profiel to meet the increased demand for steel roof and wall panels.

The new factory in Geldermalsen will replace the current manufacturing facility in Nieuwegein. It will contain two new production lines which will further strengthen SAB-profiel’s leading role in the market for construction cladding and sandwich panels, which consist of an inner and outer steel layer combined with insulation. It is expected to start production in 2019.

Theo Henrar, Chairman of Tata Steel Netherlands, said: “The new manufacturing facility will enable us to meet increasing demand in the market for steel sandwich panels. By increasing our production capacity we will be able to serve customers even better and faster with our new innovative products.”
The market for sandwich panels is growing, partly due to increasing demands for heat retention, the need to make existing buildings more sustainable and the Dutch regulation regarding the replacement of roofs containing asbestos before 2024.

Willem Vermeulen, Director of SAB-profiel: “Choosing a new building in the same region as our current factory allows us to retain our current workforce of about 50 people. We also anticipate hiring additional employees, thus further strengthening the regional economy.”

Sustainability was an important factor in the new factory design. Air source heat pumps will supply heating to the building and solar panels will be installed on its roof. Other energy-saving features include LED lighting, frequency modulators and the automatic shutting down of equipment.

SAB-profiel’s sustainable and innovative roof and wall cladding are used in industrial buildings, in logistical distribution centres and in a wide variety of other buildings. The sandwich panels improve heat retention in buildings and are recyclable. Examples of buildings containing SAB products are the Ahoy concert hall in Rotterdam, the AZ football stadium in Alkmaar, the new Bol.com distribution centre, film institute Eye in Amsterdam and Wildlands zoo in Emmen.

SAB-profiel employees about 200 people. It is the market leader in the Netherlands and has locations in IJsselstein and Nieuwegein, as well as Niederaula in Germany.
