What’s Christmas, without tradition?

Our famous ‘works Christmas parties’ have been staple of the festive calendar for steelworkers and their children since the 1950s, entertaining and supporting steel communities across the UK.

Fast forward to 2023 and these parties are still in full swing, bringing hundreds of Tata Steel employees and their families together to share in the festive spirit.

This year, the events were hosted at Aberavon Beach Hotel, Port Talbot and Rodney Parade, Newport, attracting almost 500 attendees, as well as local businesses, who provided a number of services from catering to face painting and soft play – and even the iconic Steel Works Santa.

Public Affairs and Community Manager Lewis Clark, said: “The Works Christmas parties really are the event of the year for many children in communities local to our steelmaking sites in Port Talbot and Llanwern.

“They mark a long tradition; many of the parents, and grandparents in attendance have grown up, started businesses and families in our communities, and will have their own fond memories of the parties they attended as children.

“This motivates us to make each event bigger and better each year.He continued: “Not only did every child go home with a full stomach, one-on-one time with Steel Works Santa and a gift, but we were also delighted to raise thousands of pounds for local homelessness charity, Llamau as a result.”

Tax Advisor Allan Evans – otherwise known as Steel Works Santa – added: “It’s always a pleasure to get involved in these fantastic events, it’s actually where Steel Works Santa came to fruition, while fundraising for the British Heart Foundation, in honour of our late colleague Alex Kalinik, who adored all things Christmas.

“It’s delightful to see Tata Steel continuing this festive tradition for future generations of steelworkers, while also putting local charities and organisations at the forefront.”

Lewis finished: “It has been a pleasure to revive this important tradition that continues to support our local communities. Thank you to everyone who supported, attended and volunteered during this very special and memorable week.”
