The longer length 19m Trisomet panels, with the assistance of vacuum lifting, allowed for a quicker coverage of the roof area and minimised the number of end laps and amount of labour required to prepare and install this detail, significantly reducing the build time.

Gloucester’s dock area today provides a vibrant retail, leisure and residential district. The transformation of the derelict dock area started in 2009. As part of the multi-million pound redevelopment, known as Gloucester Quays, Building Systems UK (A Tata Steel Enterprise) has supplied a wide range of its building envelope products to build the Morrisons supermarket.

The challenge

One of the key requirements specified by Morrisons was that the building was as energy efficient as possible. This meant that there was a requirement for excellent air-tightness as one of the main ways that energy is lost in inefficient buildings is heat loss through the building fabric. Morrisons also required that their corporate identity is reflected in all aspects of their stores therefore demanding high quality building products to be used.

The solution

Completed late 2013, Building Systems UK worked closely with the cladding contractor County Roofing Gloucester; the main contractor Barnwood Construction and the architect Roberts Limbrick, to provide a first-class building envelope solution with robust detailing to meet the clients design brief on air-tightness.

Building Systems UK was able to supply branded products that fitted in with Morrisons corporate identity and key requirements. One of the main drivers for choosing to work with Building Systems UK was a single source supply from a reputable company, as well as the excellent external performance of the cladding products provided by Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel which is considered to be ‘best in class’. The solution was provided with excellent guarantee cover including a Platinum® Plus system guarantee underpinned by the Confidex® Guarantee for the pre-finished steel all from Building Systems UK.

A solution incorporating Building Systems UK’s Trisomet® and Trimapanel® insulated roof and wall cladding systems was chosen to build the Gloucester Quay’s supermarket for Wm Morrisons.

Close involvement with the cladding contractor helped to deliver the robust detailing criteria and the air-tightness requirements. Longer length Trisomet® insulated panels supplied with Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® were installed on the roof area to reduce end laps and increase the speed of the installation, and for the wall elevations a combination of Trisomet® and Trimapanel® insulated panels were supplied manufactured from Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel.

For the main roof 5,000m2 of Trisomet® 120 insulated panels in Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® (Goosewing grey) was used. Panels in excess of 19m were required to facilitate the build programme. The longer length panels not only provided a quicker coverage but the 19m length panels minimised the number of end laps, requiring less trades on-site to prepare and install this detail which significantly reduced the build programme. In addition to the main roof area 500m2 of D35 RoofDek was supplied to support the flat roof area at the front of the store.
The external wall elevations were clad using a combination of Trisomet® 80 in Black Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® and Trimapanel® 90 Silver Metallic in Colorcoat Prisma®.

Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® and Colorcoat Prisma® was chosen to optimise protection against the external environment to deliver a long-lasting building envelope.

The main drivers in choosing a complete solution from Building Systems UK was the excellent guarantees offered on the systems that perform as stated and meet the highest standards on quality, thermal performance, fire safety, acoustic performance, air-tightness, water penetration and environmental credentials. This included the Confidex® Guarantee for the Colorcoat® products, combined with Platinium® Plus system guarantee.
