A long-awaited motorway service area on one of the countries busiest junctions - north of Rugby, at Junction 1 of the M6 - opened at the end of April 2021, bringing confidence to hauliers and logistics companies to make the switch to electric vehicles with provision of 24 ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging points.
Construction of the Moto services development started in 2019, although planning was granted back in 2017. The new Moto services is the largest ultra-rapid charging site on the nation’s motorways network and will service vehicles using Junction 1 to travel north and south on the M1 and M6. The facility, designed to provide a dedicated resting place and parking for HGVs, offers a welcome alternative to the HGVs resting down on residential roads and industrial estates close to the motorway, a concern for local residents.
Built for the UK's biggest service operator, Moto Hospitality Limited, by main contractor Vinci Construction UK, the new service area includes an amenity building, hotel, restaurants and retail units, petrol station, a Costa drive through, extensive car and HGV parking with 24 ultra-rapid electric charging points using contactless payment

The Moto service area is wrapped in a u-shape around an existing farm. The main services building is V-shaped with the main entrance located at one end of the building where space has been dedicated for takeaway units, and the washroom facilities sited at the adjacent end. There is even an earth bund area near to the amenity building that will create a nature space, adjacent to the hotel.
Completion of the motorway service area is a significant step in Moto's commitment to sustainable motoring and the ultra-rapid charging is expected to play a significant role in encouraging motorists to have the confidence to switch to electric vehicles.
The M6 motorway services at Rugby are the nation’s first motorway service station specifically built for electric vehicles in the UK. It has not all been plain sailing and the construction programme took place during one of the most challenging times in recent history, having to overcome lockdown restrictions and delays due to the Covid pandemic.

Around 3,500m2 of Tata Steel’s RoofDek D159 structural decking was used to form the support structure for the standing seam roof of the service areas main amenity building.
At the design stage, Tata Steel’s technical team assisted with span and load calculations for the structural decking system on the main amenity building to ensure that the structural deck could cope with the transfer of dynamic and dead loads of the standing seam roof covering to the frame.
Responsible for most of the building envelope of the Moto service station, Sage Building Envelope Contractors installed the RoofDek metal decking, chosen for its structural performance as well as being fast and simple to install.
RoofDek D159 specified for use with standing seam systems and single ply membrane roof coverings, is a trapezoidal decking that offers many benefits including exceptional strength and span capability for all roofing types, quick and easy installation, achieves low pitches, has excellent acoustic performance, and is FM Approved.
Tata Steel offers the widest range of structural roof decking manufactured in the UK, with decks ranging from 32mm to 200mm deep, in addition to structural liner trays.
